Ex-Air India captain found dead at south Delhi hotel
A former Air India captain was found dead under suspicious circumstances at Hotel The Grand in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Thursday, with police awaiting the final post-mortem and medical opinion to establish the exact cause of death.
The victim, who was working as a captain with an airline, had checked into the hotel on September 10. According to police, no immediate conclusion has been drawn regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, and further investigation is underway.
The incident came to light on the evening of September 11 after the man’s brother contacted the hotel manager and informed him that his brother was not responding to repeated calls.
Acting on the information, the manager went to the guest’s room and found the door locked from inside.
The room was subsequently opened using the hotel’s master key. The guest was found lying unconscious and unresponsive inside. Hotel staff alerted the police, following which personnel from Vasant Kunj North police station reached the spot.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, where doctors declared him dead. A crime investigation team was also called to the hotel to examine the scene and assist in the probe.
Police said there were no immediate findings that could conclusively establish the circumstances or cause of death. Given the circumstances, inquest proceedings have been initiated under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
A post-mortem examination was conducted at Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday, September 12.
However, the final cause of death will be determined only after the post-mortem findings and the subsequent medical opinion are received, police said.
The case remains under investigation, with police examining the circumstances preceding the death and other relevant details.
Until those findings are available, the exact circumstances leading to the former Air India captain’s death remain unclear.
Police said the inquiry is continuing and that the final medical findings will be crucial in determining whether the death was due to natural causes or any other circumstance. Further details are likely to emerge as investigators complete the inquest and receive the final reports.- EndsPublished By: Vivek Published On: Sep 12, 2026 19:52 IST
