Explosion injures at least 2 at munitions factory in southern Spain-Xinhua - 新华网

MADRID, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least two people sustained minor injuries in an explosion at a munitions factory in Granada, southern Spain, on Friday morning, Spanish news agency EFE reported, citing police sources.

The explosion occurred shortly before 9 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) in a restricted area used for gunpowder disposal at the El Fargue munitions factory. The cause remains under investigation.

Spain's National Police reported two people with minor hearing injuries, while the General Union of Workers (UGT) put the number of injured at three, all with similar injuries, according to EFE.

Local newspaper Granada Hoy reported, citing UGT sources at the factory, that the explosion may have occurred during a routine quality test of a projectile, when something went wrong. The union sources said the test area had been cordoned off and no one was in the immediate vicinity.

Police units, including bomb disposal specialists and forensic officers, as well as firefighters, Civil Guard officers and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene, according to EFE.

The National Police established two security cordons, one to secure the area and the other to assist nearby residents and passersby who might need help. ■
