Claim: Forty-six lawmakers from the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the height of Vice President Sara Duterte’s own impeachment trial.

Why we fact-checked this: Facebook user Boss Onin posted a video reacting to a supposed news card announcing an alleged impeachment complaint against Marcos.

The card read, “46 congressman bumoto sa impeachment ni BBM.” (46 congressmen voted for BBM’s impeachment.)

The Facebook user then said, “Ito na yung kinakatakutan ng mga loyalista (This is what the loyalists have been dreading).”

The user made two reaction videos out of it, with one having 2 million views as of this posting. Combined, the video of the claim reached 2.5 million views, had 49,900 comments, and 34,000 shares.

Commenters echoed the sentiment and called for the President’s impeachment.

The facts: No active impeachment complaint is lodged against Marcos as of September. There is also no House justice committee hearing discussing any impeachment case as of this posting.

However, two impeachment complaints were filed in January that accused him of violating the Constitution, graft and corruption, and betrayal of public trust.  They were later dismissed in February due to lack of substance.

The first complaint, filed by lawyer Andre De Jesus and endorsed by Representative Jett Nisay, had sought Marcos’ removal for allowing the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court, his alleged drug use, and his supposed role in the flood control scandal. Forty-two lawmakers voted to dismiss it.

Three Makabayan bloc members filed the second complaint, which focused on Marcos supposedly orchestrating systemic corruption involving unprogrammed appropriations and kickbacks. Thirty-nine lawmakers voted to junk the complaint.

Rappler has previously debunked another Marcos impeachment claim that repackaged a clip from a House justice committee hearing and made it look like a recent news update.

The dismissed complaints granted Marcos one year of immunity from any new impeachment proceedings, based on the Constitution. Complainants cannot file another case against him until January 2027.

Impeachment trial: The false claim surfaced at the height of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.

While Marcos’ impeachment cases were ruled to have no sufficient substance, the House saw probable cause in Duterte’s case, leading to her second impeachment.

A Supreme Court ruling halted the impeachment proceedings in July 2025 and granted Duterte a one-year impeachment immunity. She was impeached again in May 2026.

The Senate has currently convened as an impeachment court to try the Vice President. The trial enters its 33rd day on Monday, October 5.
