Failed student gets pass marks prompting Kuvempu University to file police complaint

Tampering of examination results by misusing the digital signature certificate required to edit entries in the Unified University and College Management System (UUCMS) has come to light at Kuvempu University in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. The Bhadravati Rural Police have registered a case against a staff member of the university and a student based on a complaint filed by Professor R. Thimmarayappa, Registrar (Evaluation).
A fifth-semester BSc. student of PES Institute of Advanced Management Studies in Shivamogga had appeared for the examination held in November-December 2025. He had failed in two papers, as per the results declared by the university on April 4, 2026. Later, he was shown as passed in both papers after the marks were altered on June 22.
The matter came to light when a guest faculty member in the MBA Department filed a complaint with the Registrar (Administration) on September 7. The then Registrar (Administration), N. Hemanth, directed the Registrar (Evaluation) to file a police complaint. A complaint was filed on September 10.
According to the complaint, Anusha, a temporary employee appointed as admin to handle the UUCMS, allegedly tampered with the results. She allegedly took ₹10,000 from the student to assign pass marks in each subject.
The Registrar (Evaluation) receives a fresh Digital Signature Certificate — a one-day password — every day, which is handed over to the admin to make corrections to data of students on the UUCMS portal. According to Prof. Thimmarayappa, the accused used this one-day password to alter marks of students without his knowledge.
Prof. Thimmarayappa told The Hindu, “The temporary staff member has been removed from duty and replaced by a permanent employee of the university. We are verifying whether the accused was involved in tampering with the results of any other student. The university is contemplating a comprehensive investigation into the issue.”
The police have booked Anusha and Varshith N., the student whose results were altered, for criminal breach of trust, cheating, and forgery, among other offences.
