Fenerbahçe were held to a 1-1 draw by French side Olympique Lyon at Chobani Stadium in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie.
The Turkish side started strongly and created several dangerous opportunities during the opening 15 minutes. However, Fenerbahçe gradually lost their momentum as the game was repeatedly interrupted, allowing Lyon to take greater control of possession.
The visitors took the lead in the 40th minute. Corentin Tolisso's cross was not properly cleared by the Fenerbahçe defence, allowing Lois Openda to react quickly and head the ball into the bottom corner. Lyon went into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Fenerbahçe responded immediately after the restart. Mason Greenwood levelled the score in the 47th minute with a powerful left-footed finish after cutting inside from the right.
The goal gave Fenerbahçe renewed momentum and the hosts continued to push for a winner. Both sides had chances in the second half, with Openda hitting the post for Lyon and Fenerbahçe substitute Nene Dorgeles also striking the woodwork late in the game.
Neither team was able to find a decisive goal, leaving the tie level at 1-1 after the first leg.
The return leg will be played at Lyon's Groupama Stadium on Wednesday, August 26, with the winner advancing to the Champions League league phase.
