Fierce encounter between gang of robbers and cops in UP, 1 injured
A member of a gang of robbers was injured in an encounter with the police in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district, officials said. They claimed the man, identified as Wahid alias Bholu, was injured after he and his associates opened fire at a police team during a checking operation late Friday night.
According to officials, a police team was conducting intensive checking on a road as part of a drive against criminals when they spotted two motorcycles carrying four men. When the personnel signalled them to stop, the group allegedly tried to flee.
The team immediately started pursuing the motorcycle-borne men. The suspects allegedly opened fire, following which the police personnel retaliated, triggering an encounter.
During the exchange of fire, Wahid was hit by a bullet and fell at the spot, while the other three suspects managed to escape, police said.
He was subsequently rushed to a government hospital for treatment. Police officials questioned Wahid at the hospital to identify his aides, determine the span of the gang's network and to ascertain their involvement in other criminal activities.
A motorcycle and an illegal firearm were recovered from the encounter site.
During the preliminary interrogation, police allegedly found that Wahid and his associates were involved in several incidents of burglary and snatching.
Police also said that the same gang had been intercepted by the police in Mainpuri district a few months ago.
Following that incident, Mainpuri police had been searching for members of the gang in connection with criminal activities.
After the encounter, several teams were formed and a search operation for the remaining three suspects was launched.
Police personnel from surrounding stations were deployed on link roads and checking was intensified to trace the trio.
The probe has also revealed that multiple cases have been registered against Wahid in Sambhal and neighbouring districts.- Ends(Based on inputs from Abhinav Mathur)Published By: mayukh Published On: Sep 19, 2026 10:25 IST
