FIR registered over IIT Delhi PhD scholar's death after Supreme Court direction
Delhi Police have registered an FIR following the death of an IIT Delhi PhD scholar who was found unconscious and injured at his rented accommodation in Munirka village in August.
The FIR, numbered 243/2026, was registered at Kishangarh Police Station on October 4 under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police said.
According to police, the scholar was found unconscious and in an injured condition inside his rented house in Munirka village on August 18. The door of the house was locked from the inside when neighbours discovered the situation and broke it open.
Police immediately shifted the injured scholar to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he remained under treatment for more than 45 days.
He died at AIIMS on October 3, following which the police registered the case, officials said.
Police said the FIR was registered pursuant to the directions of the Supreme Court and on the basis of a complaint received from the Security Officer of IIT Delhi.INCIDENT DID NOT TAKE PLACE ON IIT CAMPUS
The Delhi Police clarified that the incident did not take place inside the IIT Delhi campus.
According to the police, no suspicion or allegation was raised against any person by the deceased's family members or witnesses during the proceedings.
Police said the scholar was alone inside the rented accommodation when the incident took place. This was also supported by CCTV footage from a camera installed outside the house, officials said.
The circumstances in which the scholar sustained the injuries are being examined as part of the investigation.WHY FIR WAS REGISTERED?
The FIR has been registered after the scholar's death and the police are expected to examine the available evidence, including CCTV footage and statements recorded during the proceedings.
The case was registered more than a month after the scholar was found injured, after he died during treatment at AIIMS.
Police have reiterated that there was no incident inside the IIT Delhi campus and that, so far, the family and witnesses have not raised suspicion or made allegations against any individual in connection with the case.
Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the scholar's injuries and death.- Ends
