Severe storms and heavy downpours hit central and eastern Spain. Heavy downpours in the town of Madrigueras, part of the Albacete province in the Castile-La Mancha autonomous community, caused flooding.

As streets and alleys turned into lakes, vehicles were swept away by the floodwaters. Homes were submerged. A 102-year-old woman trapped in her home lost her life. Rescue teams found the elderly woman lifeless inside her home, which had been engulfed by floodwaters rising more than 1 meter high.

Rescue teams saved 90 people who were trapped in their homes due to the rising waters. The town of Madrigueras experienced “exceptionally heavy” rainfall, with more than 140 mm of rain falling in less than 2.5 hours.

Weather warnings remain in effect today across much of Spain. The state meteorological agency, Aemet, warned that the volatile weather conditions are expected to continue through next week.
