FM Dar departs for New York to attend UN General Assembly

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday departed Islamabad for New York, where he will accompany Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Foreign Office (FO) said.
According to the statement, FM Dar will be in New York from September 21 to 25 and has an “extensive and wide-ranging programme” planned during the high-level week.

The foreign minister will attend a meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir, where he will highlight Pakistan’s “unwavering support for the right to self-determination of the Kashmiris”, the statement said.
He will also attend several Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ministerial meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, including the OIC Foreign Ministers’ Annual Coordination Meeting and other OIC Contact Group meetings.
The FO said Dar would attend several high-level meetings on Palestine “as a reflection of Pakistan’s strong support for the Palestinian cause”.
These will include a meeting of the Group of Eight Arab Islamic countries and a high-level ministerial meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, among others.
FM Dar is also scheduled to address a UN Security Council high-level briefing on artificial intelligence, according to the FO.

He will additionally attend a high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response and chair the meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Council of Ministers.
The deputy prime minister will hold bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts from several countries during his visit.
He will also accompany Prime Minister Shehbaz during high-level bilateral meetings and other engagements, the Foreign Office said.
“During his extensive engagements, he will highlight Pakistan’s ongoing efforts for regional and international peace and stability,” the statement said. FM Dar will also “exchange views on important regional and international challenges”, it added.
The UN General Assembly’s high-level week brings together world leaders and senior officials for discussions on major international issues.
