Four workers who entered a waste chamber for cleaning at a private hotel in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain died due to a suspected poisonous gas leak and suffocation, authorities said on Sunday (November 1, 2026).
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday (October 31, 2026) when two workers entered the food-waste tank at Shri Ganga Hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas road and collapsed. Two more workers then entered to rescue them, resulting in the deaths of all four people, said Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh.
Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said that all four bodies were recovered by police personnel and hotel staff by breaking open the chamber, during which some people also sustained minor injuries. He said that the incident is suspected to have occurred due to a slippery slug in the chamber and a gas leak, while a further probe is ongoing in the case.
Three of the deceased have been identified as Kamlesh Tamboli, Nitin Wahid and Manoj Meena, according to police.
