Police investigated on Hyde Park Circle after a violent home invasion following a shooting early Thursday morning.

Four people were taken to hospital after a shooting inside a residence near the city’s Bridle Path neighbourhood early Thursday, which police say is being investigated as a home invasion.

Officers were called to a home on Hyde Park Circle, in the area of Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East, at 3:43 a.m. for reports that three people had been shot.

Two of the four people taken to hospital are suffering from life-threatening injuries, police said in a post to social media.

Toronto paramedics told the Star they transported four people to hospital, assessing all as having serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say three suspects fled the scene in an SUV. No suspect descriptions have been released.

Police will be providing an update from the scene at 10 a.m.

Multiple police cruisers and forensics vehicles were stationed behind yellow tape on Hyde Park Circle, a private cul-de-sac lined with trees and sprawling homes. Construction crews, including two excavators, were working on a lot at the end of the street.

A resident who lives nearby and doesn’t want to be identified for safety reasons said two officers knocked on his door around 4 a.m. saying there had been a shooting at a home on the street. He said he didn’t hear anything before police informed him of the shooting.

A family of four lives in the house, two adults and their two grown children, he said.

“We are obviously very worried for the neighbour and their family,” added the resident.

While home invasions involving a shooting are rare in the city, Toronto and other parts of the GTA have seen a spike this year in this type of violent incident, despite a widespread decline in other crimes such as homicides and robberies. As of Oct. 26, there have been 223 victims of home invasions in Toronto, surpassing last year’s total count of 183 victims, according to police’s online Public Safety Data Portal.
