At least four people were killed and several others injured in a gunfight between rival armed groups in Manipur’s Noney district on Wednesday (November 4, 2026).
Officials said the gunfight, reportedly between different Naga groups, began around 3.30 a.m. in Taodaijang village under the Nungba police station and continued for several hours.
“The frequent exchange of fire prevented security personnel from immediately reaching the area,” a district official said.
The groups involved were reportedly the Jenchui faction of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), the Kamson faction of the ZUF, and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim, also known as the NSCN (Isak-Muivah). The last two are allies.
According to locals, three of those killed belonged to the ZUF (Jenchui) group, and one was a ZUF (Kamson) member. Several people from all three groups were injured.
It was not clear what led to the gunfight.
The Rongmei Naga Luphuam, an apex women’s body of the Rongmei community, appealed to all armed groups to stop fighting.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity, a Kuki-Zo organisation, on Wednesday extended its ongoing shutdown in Kangpokpi district by another 48 hours to protest the government’s failure to deliver justice for two Kuki youths who abducted and killed a few days ago.
The shutdown was scheduled to conclude at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
