Four men found shot dead in Gqeberha as police launch investigation - IOL

Four men have been found shot dead in Gqeberha, leaving police scrambling for clues as investigators appeal to the public for information.

Eastern Cape police have established an investigation team in the province following the gruesome discovery of four men, who were found with gunshot wounds, in G-West, Walmer, Gqeberha.

The bodies were discovered on Saturday, at about 8.30pm.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the bodies were those of four men aged between 20 and 30.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the ongoing investigation. In an effort to identify possible witnesses, police conducted inquiries in the surrounding areas with no positive results.”

“Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious or who may have information that could assist the police to come forward.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating team leader of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit (SVCU), Lieutenant-Colonel Monde Sithole, on 082 457 2812, their nearest police station or SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111.Meanwhile, in a separate incident two weeks ago, IOL reported that six suspected illegal miners were found shot dead on a mountain in Mashobote, near Ngodwana.

Police believe the killings may be linked to rivalry between illegal mining groups operating in the area.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said police received a call from a local resident who reported seeing human bodies on a mountain in Mashobote.

Members of the illicit mining team were dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, indeed police found six bodies with gunshot wounds, suspected to be those of illegal miners.”

Masondo said the circumstances surrounding the incident were still under investigation.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident could be related to rivalry amongst illegal mining groups operating in the area.”

Illegal mining activities are prevalent in provinces including Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West and Limpopo.
