Fourth phase of rabies vaccination drive begins in Malappuram

The fourth phase of the anti-rabies vaccination drive for domestic animals began in Malappuram district on Tuesday (September 29).
District panchayat president P.A. Jabbar Haji inaugurated the campaign at the District Veterinary Centre. The drive is part of the Animal Husbandry department’s rabies eradication programme.
Mr. Haji urged pet owners to vaccinate all dogs and cats against rabies. He also said the district panchayat would support measures to control stray dogs and implement the animal birth control (ABC) programme.
District Animal Husbandry Officer S. Nandakumar said rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease and stressed the need for vaccination to prevent its spread.
The campaign will run till October 27 on working days. Vaccination has begun at all veterinary hospitals in the district.
According to the 2019 census, Malappuram has 18,277 domestic dogs. The campaign aims to vaccinate all domestic dogs and cats in the district.
District panchayat development standing committee chairperson Shahina Niyasi presided over the function. District coordinator of the Animal Disease Control Project A.R. Shali welcomed the gathering.
Deputy Director (Animal Husbandry) Shoukathali Vadakkumpadam, Livestock Management Training Centre deputy director K.P. Mujeeb Rahman, and senior veterinary surgeon P. Karthikeyan spoke. District epidemiologist A. Shameem proposed a vote of thanks.
