From Gujarat to UP, 7 relatives targeted train passengers, stole cash and jewellery
From Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh, seven relatives travelled together as a family to avoid suspicion while targeting train passengers for cash, jewellery and phones. The Jhansi railway police arrested four men and three women on Tuesday and recovered the stolen items from them.
All seven accused are relatives and residents of Gujarat's Bhavnagar district.
According to the Jhansi railway police, the accused would travel together on trains, keeping an eye on passengers who had fallen asleep or left their bags unattended while stepping away.advertisement❮❯ Read Full StoryHOW WERE THEY CAUGHTAfter receiving information about the gang’s activities, a police team laid a cordon near the railway tracks at the Jhansi train station.
The 7 accused were arrested at the spot. They have been identified as
Amar (45), Manoj (45), Sangeeta (42), Jyoti (42), Dilip (34), Usha (32), and Krishna Amar (20).
During interrogation, they revealed that they had targeted passengers on trains travelling from Jhansi towards Agra, Mathura, Hathras and Bareilly, while occasionally targeting trains travelling towards Ayodhya.
Two theft-related cases have been registered against the accused at the Jhansi railway police station. Their criminal records at railway stations in other districts and states are also being examined.WOMEN'S BAGS WERE MAIN TARGETS
The investigation found that the accused would mingle with passengers while travelling on trains and pay particular attention to women’s bags and belongings.
Police said that when a woman passenger fell asleep or became distracted, the accused would use the opportunity to open her bag and steal jewellery and other valuables.
According to the police, the stolen jewellery was either sold or transported to their destinations.STOLEN ITEMS RECOVERED
The police have recovered two bracelets, a mangalsutra, a ring and around Rs 5,000 in cash from the accused.
Police are trying to link the recovered jewellery to previously registered theft cases and identify the passengers to whom the items belonged.
They are also checking whether the accused are connected to other incidents.- Ends
