Full List of ICE, Border Patrol Shootings in 2026 - Newsweek

The shooting of a 28-year-old Venezuelan DoorDash delivery driver by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Austin, Texas, has brought the number of people shot by federal immigration agents in 2026 to eleven.

The start of 2026 saw an aggressive expansion of immigration enforcement activity under the Trump administration—resulting in six of the shootings this year taking place in January.

Large-scale operations, including Minnesota's "Operation Metro Surge," brought significantly more ICE and other federal immigration agents into communities, leading to a concentration of high-profile confrontations and shootings during the year's opening weeks.

Newsweek has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security via email for comment.

Renée Good was 37 years old when she was fatally shot by an ICE officer during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.

Federal officials said the officer fired after her vehicle posed a threat, but the shooting sparked wide-spread protests and scrutiny of the government and ICE.

A Border Patrol agent shot and wounded Moncada during an encounter in East Portland. Federal authorities said the shooting occurred in self-defense, while the incident prompted protests and multiple investigations.

Zambrano-Contreras was wounded in the same Portland shooting in which a Border Patrol agent opened fire on two people.

Sosa-Celis was shot in the leg by an ICE officer during an operation in Minneapolis. Later-released video raised questions about the initial federal account and led to federal prosecutors charging the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer involved with lying to investigators.

Pretti, a Minneapolis nurse, was fatally shot by CBP personnel while observing federal immigration activity. The shooting became a major flashpoint in Minnesota and remained under investigation for months.

The 37-year-old’s death was later ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, but two agents involved were charged for use of force but not the killing.

Schlegel was shot during an encounter involving Border Patrol personnel near the Arizona border.

Special Agent in Charge FBI Phoenix Heith Janke said at the time that Schlegel "has a significant criminal history," including an active warrant for smuggling. He was later indicted for attempted murder of a federal officer, transportation of illegal aliens for profit and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Daly, aged 26, was shot in an incident involving Border Patrol agents in northern New Hampshire when several rounds struck her in the head.

Following the incident, Daly was charged with one count of attempted murder of a federal officer and one count of assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous or deadly weapon.

Mendoza Hernandez, 36, was seriously wounded after ICE agents opened fire during a traffic stop in California's Central Valley.

Authorities said he drove toward agents, but his attorney Patrick Kolasinski, said Hernandez attempted to flee only after agents opened fire, describing his client as acting out of fear after being shot at and contradicting the federal account of events.

Araujo, 52, was fatally shot during an ICE enforcement operation in Houston. Federal officials said he attempted to run over an officer, but witnesses and family members later challenged that version of events with Jose Trinidad Rojas, another man detained during the incident, saying that the federal account was a “lie."

Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian immigrant, was a married father of a 3-year-old daughter who was legally authorized to work in the United States.

He was fatally shot by an ICE officer during a traffic stop connected to a search-warrant operation. Reports indicated he was not the target of the warrant being executed.

Garces Perez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan man working as a delivery driver, was shot and wounded by an ICE agent during an encounter in North Austin.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson called Garces Perez an "illegal alien" in a statement to Newsweek, though circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.
