Gael Monfils has wasted little time finding a new role in tennis after bringing the curtain down on his professional playing career. The 40-year-old has been appointed captain of France's Davis Cup team, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) announced on Saturday. He succeeds Paul-Henri Mathieu, who held the position for three years.

Monfils, who spent 22 years on the professional circuit, will now look to bring his experience and infectious energy to the French team. Former players Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet will assist him in his new role as France prepare for their next Davis Cup campaign in February 2027.

"It's an immense source of pride to become captain of the French national team. This blue shirt means so much to me. I want to build a real collective project and create the momentum that will allow us to go and win titles together," Monfils said in a statement.

The former world No. 6 represented France in eight editions of the Davis Cup, winning 12 of his 15 singles matches. One of his most memorable moments came in the 2014 final, when he defeated Roger Federer to claim France's only point in their 3-1 defeat to Switzerland. He also featured in the 2010 final, but never lifted the trophy as a player.MONFILS RECEIVES EMOTIONAL FAREWELL IN PARIS

Monfils officially confirmed his retirement on October 26, bringing an end to a career that saw him win 13 ATP titles and reach two Grand Slam semi-finals β€” at the French Open in 2008 and the US Open in 2016. His decision came after his separation from Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina, which he described as deeply painful.

He had initially been expected to make his final appearances in Lyon and at the Paris Masters. However, after announcing his retirement, the Frenchman received an emotional tribute at the Paris Masters on November 3. The ceremony brought together fans and several of his former colleagues, including Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Gilles Simon and Benoit Paire.

Monfils described the farewell as a difficult moment, but one that allowed him to thank the supporters who had followed his journey. The appointment as Davis Cup captain now gives the popular Frenchman an opportunity to remain closely connected to the sport.

France, a 10-time Davis Cup champion, last lifted the trophy in 2017. Monfils will now look to help the team return to the top of the competition.- Ends
