'Gangs of Wasseypur' redux: Real-life Faizal Khan's brother injured in firing
Fourteen years after 'Gangs of Wasseypur' brought the Dhanbad neighbourhood’s gang wars to the big screen, gunfire returned to its streets on Monday when two motorcycle-borne assailants targeted gangster Faheem Khan’s brother in broad daylight.
Faheem Khan is widely believed to have inspired the character of Faizal Khan, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the film.
Shanu Khan was speaking to a group of people in Wasseypur when two men arrived on a red motorcycle and opened fire before fleeing.
Three people were injured in the attack. Shanu Khan suffered bullet wounds, while Shaham, who runs a local store in the town, was hit twice. A woman caught in the firing was also injured.
The three were taken to a local hospital and later referred to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Police said they were out of danger.
The attack was not the first attempt on Shanu Khan’s life. He was shot at near Alinagar around a year ago but escaped unhurt.
Police are now investigating whether the latest shooting was the result of an old rivalry or an ongoing gang dispute. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify the attackers and trace their escape route.
A forensic team inspected the scene and collected evidence. Initial reports said eight spent cartridges and two live rounds were recovered, though Dhanbad City Superintendent of Police Ritwik Srivastava put the number of spent cartridges at seven.
