Gen Alpha in action: 7-year-old girl's plea to UP official gets broken road fixed
A seven-year-old girl’s appeal to the Mau District Magistrate (DM) in Uttar Pradesh for the repair of a broken road in her neighbourhood has led to immediate government action, with the road now rebuilt.
Samara Naz, approached the DM on September 1 and submitted a letter seeking the repair of the damaged and dilapidated road in her locality. She told the DM that she often fell while travelling to and from school because of the poor condition of the road, which also left her school uniform dirty.
The DM listened carefully to Samara and told her, “Okay beta, you go and study. We will get your road repaired.”
Following the DM’s directions, the municipal council’s junior engineer and his team reached the spot the very next day. The team carried out the measurement of the road and completed all necessary procedures, including the estimate and tender process, for its construction.
The municipal council subsequently completed the permanent construction of the damaged road.
After the work was completed, Mau District Magistrate Anand Vardhan visited Samara’s house and inspected the newly constructed road.
During the visit, Vardhan asked the girl whether she was happy with the road being repaired, and she replied, “Yes sir.” The DM then fed her sweets with his own hands and gifted her chocolates and a bicycle.
After receiving the bicycle, Samara rode it while the DM and other officials walked alongside her. The DM asked her what she had studied at school that day and encouraged her to study well. He told her that her road had now been repaired and asked her to study with dedication.
Samara thanked the DM and the municipal officials for getting the road repaired. She also thanked the media for showing her video.
Explaining the action taken, Mau DM Anand Vardhan said the issue of Ward Number 17 had been brought to his attention by Samara. He said the ward had only recently been included in the municipal area and that the colony had old brick-paved roads.
Vardhan said a team was sent to the area the next day following the child’s complaint. Officials measured the road and prepared its estimate. He said the aim was to complete quality work within a fixed timeframe.
He added that other residents of the village population also use the road and that some other roads in the area also need to be constructed. The administration would take action on those roads soon, he said.
The DM praised Samara for bringing the issue to the authorities and speaking about it fearlessly. He said that many kinds of public grievances come before officials during public hearings and that Samara raised her concern and got it addressed. He congratulated her and said the administration would continue working to resolve public grievances in the same manner.
After the road was repaired, and she received the bicycle, Samara said, “DM sir got the road to my house repaired.” She thanked the media for running her video and also thanked the DM, the executive officer (EO) and the JE.
