German chancellor expects no major shift in US president’s policies despite Republican election loss - Anadolu Ajansı
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Wednesday that he does not expect a fundamental shift in the policies of President Donald Trump despite the defeat in the US midterm elections by the Republicans.
"Even over the last two years, Trump has largely governed by bypassing Congress. Why should that be any different now?" Merz said at the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Economic Forum in Berlin.
Merz pointed out that under the US Constitution, the president holds a powerful position and can make decisions independently of Congress.
Germany said earlier that it plans “to continue its close cooperation” with the US despite the election results, which dealt a major setback to Trump.
“The USA is—and will remain—an important partner and ally for us. We will continue our close cooperation with the USA, even if a different constellation were to emerge in both chambers,” deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer said at a media briefing in Berlin.
