Giants sign former NFL starter to roster after Jaxson Dart injury - Touchdown Wire

After Jaxson Dart was sidelined in Week 2 for the rest of the season, the New York Giants are rushing to get things in place inside their quarterback room ahead of this weekend's showdown with the Tennessee Titans. On Saturday, they took an important step by securing a backup quarterback as Jameis Winston prepares to inherit the starting role.

Reports on Saturday indicate that the Giants have signed practice squad quarterback Jake Haener to their active roster, with the intention being that he'll serve as Winston's backup. Haener played in two preseason games for the Giants this season, going 9-for-10 passing for 116 yards and one touchdown in limited action.

Haener brings some NFL experience to the roster, as he played in eight games and started one for the New Orleans Saints in 2024. He went 18-for-39 passing for 226 yards, one touchdown, and one interception during that season for the Saints, with his lone start coming in a 20-19 loss to the Commanders, where he went 4-for-10 for 49 yards and one interception before being benched.

He could get his opportunity at redemption for that rough start if Winston continues to play the way he did when he entered the game for the Giants in Week 2. The Giants lost 28-6, and Winston had a dismal showing: 11-for-27 for 111 yards and an interception. If he doesn't improve, the Giants could turn to Haener to see what he's got.
