An eight-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital by after being seriously injured in a wolf attack at a German wildlife park, police said.

The attack happened in Baruth/Mark, a town south of Berlin. Neither the employee nor the other children were injured.

The incident happened inside an animal enclosure at JohannismΓΌhle that offers small group tours. The child was with a staff member and two other children.

Police said: "The girl was attacked and seriously injured by at least one wolf within an animal enclosure while she was there with two other children and a staff member."

They added in a statement that "the precise circumstances of the incident are the subject of an ongoing police investigation".

The park houses brown bears, lynx, and grey and arctic wolves, its website states. It has temporarily closed without providing further details.

In March this year a wolf bit a woman in a shopping area in Hamburg, in what is believed to be the first such attack since wolves returned to the country in 1998. Emergency services at the time said that the woman was taken to a Hamburg hospital after the unusual encounter. The attack took place in a shopping area near the Altona station, west of the city center.

The latest incident in Germany comes after a number of other animal attacks at zoos and wildlife parks across Europe in recent weeks.

A keeper at a Dutch zoo died after being mauled by a leopard. The woman, whose name has been withheld in accordance with Dutch privacy law, passed away on Tuesday, the park in the southern Dutch town of Hilvarenbeek said.

She had suffered serious wounds to her head and neck on Saturday while working in an enclosure with two male Persian leopards. The woman began working at the zoo when she was 17.

In Yorkshire a man was killed by a tiger at Wildlife Park earlier this month. The man was seen wearing headphones and "pacing around" near the enclosure before he went in.

City of Doncaster Council launched a health and safety investigation into the death.
