Got spekboom in your garden? Researchers say you should be eating it - EWN
Spekboom is well known in South Africa for its environmental benefits, but researchers at the University of the Free State are also looking at its potential as a healthy addition to our diets.
Professor Alba du Toit, Chair of Innovative Agro-processing for Climate Smart Food Systems at the university, told CapeTalk's John Maytham that spekboom is high in vitamin C and contains many of the minerals found in other green leafy vegetables.
βIn combination with other food, it is very, very nutritious and it's also delicious.β
But she warned that itβs not enough on its own, so donβt ditch the rest of your dinner just yet.
βItβs not very high in energy and also protein, so it needs to be combined with other foods that we generally eat,β she said.
