Wind, rain and ... snow? Here's what you need to know

Grab your windbreakers and winter coats, as gusting winds and snowfall are coming for parts of Newfoundland on Friday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Robert Grove said “weather is on the way.”

The agency has issued a number of weather warnings for Friday across parts of Newfoundland.

Starting Friday afternoon and into the evening, there is a yellow wind warning in effect for southeast and southwest Avalon Peninsula. Winds are expected to gust up to 80 km/h and 100 km/h along parts of the coast.

CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler said that strong winds will affect other areas around the island as well.

"The strongest winds will stay well offshore ... but really most areas from the west coast, central eastern areas of the island will be seeing those gusts somewhere between 60 to 80 kilometres per hour," she said.

Both Burgeo-Ramea and the Burin Peninsula have a yellow wind warning and special weather statement in effect that could bring between two to five centimetres of snowfall.

“We have some falling temperatures. And so unfortunately that means I have to say the word snow,” said Grove, adding snowfall should be contained to high terrain areas and could impact driving conditions.

The Clarenville area could also be getting between two to five centimetres of snow.

Connaigre is also getting a yellow wind warning for Friday, with a warning local utility outages could happen and travel could be disrupted. Environment Canada is also forecasting potential snowfall between two to five centimetres for the area.

Grove advised drivers on the Bay d'Espoir Highway, Burgeo Highway and Burin Highway and Trans-Canada Highway between Goobies and the Port Blandford area to take care of slippery road conditions.

Brauweiler says 10-20 millimetres of rain are also in the mix for parts of the province over the coming days, beginning on Thursday.
