Delhi Police officer Vivek Bhagat, who was promoted to the rank of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), has himself asked the Commissioner of Police to keep his promotion order on hold, citing an ongoing Crime Branch enquiry into Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP's) allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Bhagat, currently posted as Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) at Connaught Place Police Station in New Delhi, was among 12 police officers promoted to the rank of Additional DCP through an order issued on October 5 (Monday). The order was signed by Deputy Secretary (Home) Ramesh Kumar.

However, in a letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner, Bhagat said an enquiry was pending against him in connection with allegations made by a YouTuber and sought that the order concerning his promotion be kept on hold.

"Considering the enquiry pending against me in the Crime Branch Delhi Police regarding allegations against me by a YouTuber, I hereby give my consent to keep this order concerning only me on hold," Bhagat said in the letter on Monday. Bhagat's promotion was part of the routine process linked to his service and was not connected to the ongoing protests. However, the decision drew sharp criticism for the timing of the development due to the ongoing harassment allegations against him.

"Every day, Delhi Police stoops to a new low. Vivek Bhagat, accused of molesting a female journalist, instead of facing action, gets promoted to Additional DCP. What kind of system are we living in, where an allegation of molestation is followed by a promotion?" CJP posted on X, questioning the promotion of the 32-year-old SDPO. Bhagat was among the police officers accused of misconduct during the protest at Jantar Mantar, where journalists and protesters had gathered in connection with the demand for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.

CJP's co-convener Saurav Das has accused Bhagat of groping a woman journalist during the protest and demanded his suspension and registration of an FIR. Founder and Convener of the CJP, Abhijeet Dipke, has also alleged that police refused to register an FIR on the woman's complaint.

Three complaints alleging sexual harassment and manhandling by Delhi Police personnel were transferred to the Crime Branch on October 4 (Sunday) for what Delhi Police called a "fair and impartial inquiry".DELHI POLICE ARRESTS 'SELF CLAIMED INDEPENDENT JOURNALIST'

Delhi Police on Tuesday said it arrested a person posing as an independent journalist for allegedly damaging the image of the force by uploading fabricated CCTV footage on social media "falsely portraying Vivek Bhagat in bad light".

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Additional DCP Manjeet Sheoran said the Cyber Police Station of the New Delhi district flagged the content, following which an FIR was registered.

During the investigation, police found that the social media account was being operated by a resident of Haryana. The officer said the accused had allegedly created the fabricated footage using AI tools.

Delhi Police said the alleged motive was to malign the image of the force, spread anarchy and create an atmosphere of unrest by inciting protesters and potentially triggering violence.Team of Cyber Police station, @DCPNewDelhi arrested one self claimed independent journalist for circulating a fabricated video falsely portraying Sh. The other officers named in the order are Vikas Sheokand, A Venkatesh, Gursewak Singh, Renu Lata, Vidushi Kaushik, Manu Himanshu, Sakaria Mihir Pravinbhai, Garima Tiwari, Ashish Kumar, Manish Ladla and Rohit Gupta.

A senior police officer told PTI that the promotions were routine and that a request for the elevation of the officers had been sent much earlier.

Bhagat's decision to seek a hold on his own promotion therefore comes at a time when the allegations against him are still under enquiry.

The complaints of harassment have also triggered protests outside Parliament Street police station.

Journalists staged a sit-in on October 3 demanding FIRs against the police personnel accused of misconduct during the protest.

The All India Students' Association (AISA) has also alleged that male police personnel manhandled women protesters, journalists and lawyers during the protest, with several women alleging that they were groped.

The allegations are now part of the Crime Branch's enquiry. There has been no official communique from the Delhi Police Commissioner regarding Bhagat's request.- Ends(Written by Avinash Kateel)
