Police have tightened security across Haryana ahead of Diwali on November 8 to maintain law and order and prevent fire incidents involving firecrackers, news agency Press Trust of India reported, citing officials.

Police personnel have been asked to closely monitor the manufacture, storage, transportation and sale of firecrackers. They will also ensure compliance with safety standards and act against those violating the law.

Director General of Police Ajay Singhal said citizens' safety and the maintenance of peace and law and order during festivals were the police's highest priorities.

He directed the police administration to coordinate with other departments to ensure that Diwali is celebrated in a safe, peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.

Singhal also called for the effective implementation of guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, other courts and the Haryana government on the sale and use of firecrackers.

Police officers have been directed to conduct special drives in their respective areas to identify firecracker warehouses, storage facilities and sales outlets, as well as vehicles and routes used to transport firecrackers. They have also been asked to inspect shops and verify the validity of licences, PTI reported.

The DGP said firecrackers would be sold only at designated and pre-identified locations. Officials said police patrols and checks would be intensified in markets and other sensitive areas during Diwali.

The Fire Department and hospitals have been advised to remain alert and make the necessary arrangements to deal with emergencies.

Police appealed to people to celebrate Diwali safely and peacefully, purchase firecrackers only from authorised vendors and report any suspicious activity or illegal storage of firecrackers. The measures are aimed at ensuring compliance with safety rules and maintaining peace during the festival.- Ends
