Along the Tarim River in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Uygur people have a distinctive celebration known as Meshrep, typically including music, dancing, poetry and conversation. In 2010, UNESCO inscribed the tradition in its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
