HDFC Bank sends two names to RBI for CEO post: Who could get the top job?
HDFC Bank has submitted two names to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the bank's next MD and CEO, with deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha emerging as the strongest internal candidate and one external candidate also in contention, reported the Economic Times.
The identity of the external candidate submitted to the RBI has not been independently ascertained. However, Anup Bagchi, CEO of ICICI Prudential Life, and K Balasubramanian, CEO of Citi India, were among the strongest contenders in the final stages of the external search, ET reported.
The selection comes as HDFC Bank prepares for a leadership transition while continuing to integrate the erstwhile HDFC Ltd business.KAIZAD BHARUCHA EMERGES AS STRONG INTERNAL CONTENDER
Bharucha is currently the strongest internal candidate for the top job, according to the report.
He has been with HDFC Bank since 1995 and joined the bank's board as an executive director in June 2014. He currently oversees a large part of the bank's asset franchise, including retail assets, mortgages, corporate banking, emerging corporates, business banking and rural lending.
His candidature would offer continuity to HDFC Bank at a time when the lender is managing a leadership transition as well as the continuing integration of HDFC Ltd's business.
There is, however, a regulatory hurdle.
RBI rules cap the continuous tenure of a managing director, CEO or whole-time director at a private bank at 15 years. Bharucha would reach that ceiling in June 2029.
HDFC Bank has therefore sought a relaxation of around six months from the RBI's tenure rules. If granted, the dispensation would allow Bharucha to complete a full three-year term as MD and CEO if he is selected.WHO ARE THE EXTERNAL CONTENDERS?
The bank's external search considered a much wider pool before narrowing down the field.
HDFC Bank reportedly received more than 150 applications, of which around 50 were shortlisted. Fewer than 10 bankers were eventually interviewed.
In the final stages, Anup Bagchi and K Balasubramanian emerged as the strongest external contenders, according to people cited in the ET report.
Bagchi, 55, has more than three decades of experience with the ICICI Group. His career has covered retail banking, MSME and rural banking, corporate banking, treasury and markets, credit policy, digital channels and data analytics.
He has also headed ICICI Securities and has been the CEO of ICICI Prudential Life since 2023. His experience covers lending, liabilities, capital markets and insurance, giving him exposure to a wide range of financial businesses.
Balasubramanian, meanwhile, has a stronger corporate and institutional banking background. He is currently CEO of Citi India and head of banking for the Indian subcontinent.
He also has some familiarity with HDFC Bank, having spent a brief period there in 2016-17. During that stint, he headed corporate banking and the government business, giving him some knowledge of the bank's culture and senior management.
The CEO race therefore appears to have narrowed down to a choice between continuity through Bharucha and an external appointment, although the identity of the external candidate actually submitted to the RBI has not been confirmed.
For Bharucha, the biggest advantage is his long association with HDFC Bank and his current role overseeing several key businesses. For an external candidate, the bank has been looking for someone who has experience managing businesses of significant scale and complexity, given HDFC Bank's size and balance sheet.
The final decision will depend on the bank's board process and RBI approval.
The CEO succession is particularly significant given the scale of HDFC Bank and the ongoing integration of the erstwhile HDFC Ltd business. The choice between an experienced insider and an external banker will determine the leadership direction of the lender as it moves into its next phase.- EndsPublished By: Sonu VivekPublished On: Sep 14, 2026 16:51 IST
