Heavy rain continues in Thailand, flooding Bangkok

Intermittent heavy rain <> has caused flooding in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, forcing about 4,200 residents to temporarily evacuate to makeshift shelters.

An active low-pressure system and strong monsoon conditions brought heavy rain to parts of the country.

Local media said the amount of rainfall in the 48 hours since Thursday reached nearly 300 millimeters.

Wide areas of Bangkok have been flooded, with roads submerged.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt says flood damage is serious, especially in areas along rivers.

About 52,000 households in the capital have been affected. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has prepared more than 230 temporary shelters.

No injuries have been reported so far.

In Bangkok, cars were seen moving slowly through flooded streets, while pedestrians carefully waded through knee-deep water.

Thai weather officials say the rain is expected to ease in some areas from Sunday. But they say areas already affected by flooding should remain on alert for additional rainfall, particularly in low-lying areas.
