Heavy rains damaged 2,405 km of R&B roads in Andhra Pradesh, says Minister

The Andhra Pradesh Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department has estimated that 2,405 km of roads across the State were damaged by heavy rains triggered by the severe cyclonic storm, with the preliminary cost of restoration estimated at ₹1,498.30 crore.
R&B Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy said on Monday that all the damaged roads would be restored at the earliest. The department had taken precautionary and relief measures to minimise inconvenience to the public during the heavy rains.
Srikakulam district reported the highest extent of damage, with 412 km of R&B roads affected, he said.
Road breaches were reported at 36 locations, while potholes and other major damages were reported at nine locations. Temporary restoration works had been completed at all these locations to ensure that traffic was not disrupted.
As many as 187 cross-drainage (CD) works were damaged, of which restoration works had been taken up at 169 locations. Fallen trees blocking roads at 254 locations were removed, while traffic disruptions caused by the rains at 103 locations were cleared by departmental personnel, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said.
The department estimated that ₹162.09 crore would be required for temporary restoration works and another ₹1,336.83 crore for permanent restoration of the damaged roads. The total preliminary estimate for restoring the road network affected by the cyclonic storm stood at ₹1,498.30 crore.
The Minister appreciated the field-level officials and staff of the R&B Department for their prompt response and efforts during the adverse weather conditions.
