Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution and make road safety a priority as thousands of South Africans take to the roads on Heritage Day, with increased traffic expected on major routes and around popular destinations.

The Heritage Day holiday coincides with school closure, with many families expected to use the opportunity to travel, visit relatives and take part in holiday activities.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to check traffic and weather conditions before departing, allow sufficient time for their journeys and avoid unnecessary risks.

Motorists have also been encouraged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off.

The RTMC has called on motorists to obey speed limits and adjust their speed according to road, traffic and weather conditions.

Drivers have also been warned never to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to avoid using mobile phones while driving.

The RTMC urged motorists to maintain a safe following distance, avoid dangerous overtaking and obey traffic signs and road markings.

“All road users are urged to” make road safety a priority, the RTMC said.

Motorists have also been reminded to ensure all occupants wear seat belts at all times and that children are properly secured in appropriate child-restraint systems.

Those travelling long distances have been advised to take regular breaks and avoid driving when tired.

The RTMC has urged motorists to check their vehicles before leaving, including their tyres, brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and fluid levels.

Road users have also been encouraged to exercise additional caution around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and children, particularly in residential areas and around recreational facilities.

Parents and caregivers have been encouraged to remind children about basic pedestrian safety when walking near busy roads, shopping centres, public transport facilities and holiday destinations.

The RTMC said the Heritage Day long weekend and school closure provide an opportunity for families and communities to spend time together, while urging all road users to play their part in preventing crashes.

“Arrive alive. Slow down, stay alert and make safety a priority,” the RTMC said.
