High-ranges of Kottayam receive heavy rain

Heavy rain lashed the eastern parts of Kottayam on Sunday, disrupting normal life and triggering a soil slippage on the Erattupetta–Vagamon road.

The high-range areas of Teekoy, Thalanad, Poonjar, Adivaram and Vagamon received heavy showers from around 4 p.m. Pala and Bharananganam also experienced heavy rain.

A landslide at Karikad Top on the Erattupetta–Vagamon road brought traffic to a halt after debris fell on two cars. No injuries were reported.

The rain also led to a sharp increase in water flow in the tributaries of the Meenachil river. The river was carrying muddy, turbulent water in the Teekoy area, while water gushed onto the Erattupetta–Vagamon road at several points, disrupting traffic.

The road remained blocked at several locations, with traffic particularly heavy on Sunday. Extremely heavy rain continued in Vagamon, Meladukkam and Adivaram areas till late in the evening.

Poonjar MLA P.J. Sebastian urged people to avoid unnecessary travel through hilly areas amid the risk of landslides and flash floods. He also warned of a possible rise in the Meenachil river, urging residents in Teekoy, Erattupetta, Pala and other flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.
