Hindu couple gets married at Tamil Nadu dargah, Muslim elders bless newlyweds

A Hindu couple got married at the famous Nagore Dargah in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district, in a ceremony attended by Muslim elders from the shrine's administration, highlighting the region's longstanding tradition of religious harmony.

The wedding took place at the Nagore Andavar Dargah on Sunday, with the couple surrounded by family, relatives and friends. Members of the dargah administration also attended the ceremony and congratulated the newlyweds.

Nagore Dargah's chairman and hereditary trustee, Mohammad Khalifa Sahib, was among those who blessed the couple. Footage from the ceremony, showing the newlyweds being showered with akshata, or auspicious rice, has also surfaced online.‘NAGAPATTINAM IS SYNONYMOUS WITH RELIGIOUS HARMONY’

Speaking about the wedding, Khalifa Sahib said Nagapattinam has long been known for its tradition of people of different faiths living together. “Nagapattinam district is synonymous with religious harmony. There is something special about the Nagore Dargah in particular. The marriage of a Hindu brother took place in the presence of Muslim elders, surrounded by family and friends,” he said.

He added that such weddings were not unusual at the dargah, but said the current environment had made it important to highlight examples of communal harmony.

“This is a regular event at the Nagore Dargah. But in the current environment, we have become compelled to share such events as videos and say, ‘This is what we are’. Apart from that, we also have a duty to take this harmony to the next generation,” he said.
