During a live broadcast, chaos suddenly broke out, and the camera was knocked to the ground. A reporter and a cameraman covering the news in Mexico narrowly escaped death when a vehicle skidded out of control on the wet road and struck them, and the entire incident was broadcast second by second.
According to a report by Infobae, the incident occurred Friday morning in Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo León, Mexico. Reporter Alma Mireya de la Rosa and cameraman Cristo Morales, who were broadcasting live for Gamavisión, were standing in the regular traffic lanes at the intersection of Morones Prieto Street and Pedro Martínez Street.
Just then, a vehicle traveling on the wet road lost control. The spinning vehicle struck the two journalists who were on a live broadcast.
Following the accident, the broadcast camera remained on the ground for approximately 7 seconds. As the images appeared on screen, anchor Mario Gámez in the studio tried to figure out what was happening, and panic ensued.
Gámez reported the accident to viewers during the live broadcast, stating, “We just witnessed an accident on live TV,” and announced that reporter Alma de la Rosa and cameraman Cristo Morales had been struck by the vehicle.
After the incident, Gámez went to the hospital to check on his colleagues and later announced that both journalists were doing well.
After the accident, Alma Mireya de la Rosa posted a statement on her social media account regarding her health.
De la Rosa noted that it was a great stroke of luck that she and the cameraman had survived the accident, saying, “We’re alive by a miracle.”
The reporter noted that she had sustained numerous blows in the accident but that there was no clear information yet regarding any fractures. De la Rosa said that she and her cameraman were undergoing medical evaluation.
It was reported that cameraman Cristo Morales had sustained some fractures but that his condition was stable.
Immediately after the accident, teams from Monterrey Civil Protection and medical personnel from the Red Cross arrived at the scene. De la Rosa and Morales, who received initial treatment at the scene, were later taken to a private hospital for further treatment.
In a subsequent statement, host Mario Gámez noted that his two colleagues were doing well, adding that while they had been shaken up, injured, and frightened by the accident, their lives were not in danger.
It was reported that the driver of the vehicle believed to have caused the accident was a 19-year-old man. The driver, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle on the wet road and veered off course, was taken into custody by authorities in Monterrey following the incident.
An investigation into the accident has been launched, and it was reported that teams are continuing their work to determine how the incident occurred.
