How AI Opened New Pathways for Vocational Students Once Left Behind

“MISS, I’m only here because I failed to get into SMA Negeri.” This quiet confession, whispered on the first day of class, has become a familiar refrain during my years teaching at a public vocational high school in Bangka Belitung. My school is rarely anyone’s first choice. It is where students arrive after rejection from more prestigious state schools, carrying disappointment, shame, and a sense of failure. 

This emotional burden is compounded by our material realities. Classrooms have broken ceiling fans, libraries hold outdated books, computer labs barely function, and internet access is slow and unreliable. Teaching English in this context is not only about limited facilities, it is about teaching students who have already lost confidence in themselves before learning even begins. Yet over the past year, something unexpected happened. Free, mobile based AI tools requiring minimal infrastructure helped transform my classroom from a place of resignation into a space where students began to rediscover their potential. This is not a story about technology solving every problem, but about how the right tools, used thoughtfully, can help students rebuild belief in their ability to learn.

Many vocational students do not simply struggle academically, they carry the stigma of failure. When asked to introduce themselves, some begin with statements like, “I’m not smart,” or “I’m bad at school.” Their families often reinforce this narrative. During parent meetings, I frequently hear comments such as, “Just make sure my child graduates,” or “English isn’t important for their future anyway.” This hopelessness becomes contagious. Students stop trying because they believe effort will not change their situation. Ironically, while our school lacks basic learning facilities, almost every student owns a smartphone. These devices are rarely new often secondhand but they are functional. At first, smartphones felt like the enemy. Students used them to scroll through TikTok, play games, or chat during lessons. Confiscating phones became a daily routine. Then a question changed my teaching approach entirely, what if the phones were not the problem, but the solution?

I began experimenting with three free or low cost AI based applications that could run on students’ phones: ELSA Speak, Grammarly, and Wayground. The goal was not simply to improve English skills, but to rebuild students’ confidence through private practice, immediate feedback, and visible progress. 

ELSA Speak was introduced first to address pronunciation an area where students felt particularly anxious. The app uses AI speech recognition to provide instant feedback and scores. Its game like features, such as points and levels, turned practice into an activity that felt more like playing than studying. More importantly, ELSA created a judgment-free space. Students who were too embarrassed to speak English in class practiced repeatedly at home without fear of being laughed at. One student, Rendi, who used to tremble when asked to speak, practiced daily for several weeks. Eventually, he volunteered to read aloud in class for the first time all year. That moment marked a turning point not only for him, but for his peers.

For writing, I introduced the free version of Grammarly as a supportive tool rather than a shortcut. Previously, returning essays filled with red corrections only reinforced students’ sense of failure. Grammarly allowed them to see errors privately, along with explanations. Students could revise their work independently, learning grammar without public embarrassment. The app’s weekly progress reports became especially powerful. Students could see concrete evidence that their mistakes were decreasing over time. This visible improvement challenged their belief that they were “bad students” and replaced it with the idea that improvement was possible.

To support vocabulary learning, I used Wayground, an AI-powered app based on spaced repetition. The system adapted automatically to each student’s level, ensuring they were challenged without being overwhelmed. Students were encouraged to create vocabulary sets based on their personal interests motorcycles, makeup, games making English feel more relevant to their lives.
