A Stanford Medicine study has challenged the traditional understanding of brain development, finding that the forebrain and hindbrain arise from separate progenitor cells. Researchers traced this two-system pattern across 550 million years of evolution, including in chickens, zebrafish and acorn worms. The discovery could help scientists study brainstem diseases and develop better laboratory models.
