While some praised the competitor for refusing to quit, others questioned whether the decision put fellow athletes at risk by leaving them to compete on the same course.

The organisers confirmed on Saturday night that a major cleanup operation had been launched after the incident. They acknowledged that the incident had exposed ambiguity in how their medical and biocontaminant protocols were applied during the event.HYROX SAYS PROTOCOLS BECAME 'BLURRED'

HYROX said it has “clear biocontaminant and medical procedures” in place but described what happened in China as an unforeseen situation in which protocols designed for elite competition and mass participation “became blurred”, creating uncertainty over how they should be applied and understood.

The organisers said the sport was continuing to evolve and that increasingly complex situations could challenge existing procedures.

The organisers also acknowledged their responsibility to examine what happened and improve their procedures.

HYROX said athletes were expected to push themselves to the highest levels and that courage, resilience and a refusal to give in were central to what made elite competitors extraordinary.

Some members of the fitness community pointed to the event’s strict approach to other rule violations. They noted that competitors can face penalties for relatively minor infractions, including spitting, and questioned why the race was not immediately stopped in the affected areas once contamination became apparent.

Participants and online commenters also raised concerns about fellow competitors coming into contact with contaminated rubber mats, sled handles and sections of the running track. Some demanded an apology from organisers and raised the possibility of refunds.

One user said, “I know athletes like to keep going and you see plenty of people in marathons doing this, but why didn’t the head judge step in and DQ her?” The user called the incident “revolting” and a “biohazard”, pointing out that hundreds of other competitors would have used the course afterwards.

Another user asked, “How does this even happen?” and questioned why the athlete did not stop to use a bathroom. The commenter said it was difficult to understand why someone would risk “having the whole world see” such an incident simply to finish the race, while also raising concerns about other competitors using the same equipment.

Wietrzyk’s status as one of HYROX’s leading athletes also featured in the online reaction.

One user said, “She’s the top Hyrox athlete in the world. Multiple records and sponsorships,” suggesting that not finishing could have been a concern from a sponsorship perspective.
