‘If Nizam was so good, why did Komuram Bheem and Chakali Ailamma rebel?’, asks Kishan Reddy

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy questioned Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s praise of Nizam’s rule in the Legislative Assembly, asking why freedom fighters and Telangana’s iconic figures such as Komuram Bheem, Chakali Ailamma and Doddi Komuraiah had fought against the Nizam’s rule if it was as “good” as portrayed.

Addressing the Telangana Liberation Day celebrations organised by the Centre, Mr. Kishan Reddy criticised the Congress and BRS for allegedly glorifying the Nizam’s rule for appeasing a section and “bowing before” the AIMIM.

He also questioned why people in villages had to construct fortified structures, or burujus, to protect themselves from Razakar attacks if Nizam was an excellent ruler. He also cited the famous anti-Nizam song of poet Bandi Yadagiri and asked why such voices of protest had emerged if the Nizam’s administration had been as exemplary.

“Mr. Revanth Reddy owed an explanation to the people of Telangana for defending the Nizam’s rule,” Mr. Reddy demanded. He said historical accounts of the Nizam’s rule, the Razakar violence and the suffering of people should not be suppressed for political considerations. He drew a comparison with the manner in which Nazi atrocities in Germany continue to be remembered as a warning to future generations and said the history of the Nizam and the Razakars should also be told to people.

Mr. Kishan Reddy said the BJP had been demanding official recognition for September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day since the 1980s and had faced arrests, cases and police action during its campaign.

He said the day would come when liberation day celebrations would be organised officially in every village, gram panchayat, Government school and public square in Telangana by 2029.
