IIT Roorkee PhD admissions 2026-27 open: Application dates, eligibility, fees
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee is inviting applications for admission to its PhD programmes for the Spring Semester of the 2026-27 academic session. The online application process which began on September 21, will continue until October 20.
The institute has announced PhD opportunities across its departments, centres and schools at its Roorkee and Saharanpur campuses. Candidates applying with a master's degree must have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60 per cent marks. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is a CGPA of 5.50 or 55 per cent marks.
Candidates with a master's degree are also required to qualify in a national-level examination such as GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, including lectureship/Assistant Professorship, PhD-only examinations or an equivalent examination, or hold a national-level fellowship.
Candidates with a four-year bachelor's degree need a minimum CGPA of 7.50 or 75 per cent marks and must have qualified a relevant national-level test or hold a national-level fellowship.
Candidates with a bachelor's or master's degree from IITs and a CGPA of 8.0 or above are exempted from the national-level test requirement. Similarly, candidates with a BTech degree or MSc with a CGPA of 8.0 or above from Ministry of Education-funded technical institutions are exempted from the requirement of GATE or NET.
IIT Roorkee is offering PhD opportunities across a wide range of disciplines. These include Architecture and Planning, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science and Engineering, Design, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Hydrology, Management Studies, Mathematics, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Physics and Water Resources Development and Management.
The institute also lists research opportunities through specialised centres, including transportation systems, disaster mitigation and management, nanotechnology, photonics and quantum communication technology, space science and technology, sustainable energy, and the Indian Knowledge System.
The Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence also offers research areas including data mining and big data analytics, machine learning and deep learning, image and video analytics, natural language processing, robotics, IoT and sensors, and statistical and mathematical methods.PHD ASSISTANTSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
For full-time research scholars, IIT Roorkee may provide financial assistance through Institute Assistantships. These assistantships can be awarded for up to five years, with scholars expected to devote up to 10 hours a week to teaching or research-related work assigned by their department, centre or school.
The brochure also lists externally funded research opportunities and project-funded admissions.
The institute also highlights opportunities such as the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship, TCS Research Scholar Programme and Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme.
Under the TCS Research Scholar Programme, selected scholars can receive a stipend of Rs 70,000 per month in the first and second years and Rs 75,000 per month in the third and fourth years, subject to the scheme's conditions.SPECIAL PHD SCHEMES FOR WOMEN CANDIDATES
IIT Roorkee has also listed special admission schemes for eligible women candidates.
Under the Golden Girl Scheme, first-rank holder female candidates from an IIT or an institute/university within the top 50 of the latest NIRF overall rankings can apply for direct admission, subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions. The requirement of qualifying an all-India-level examination is exempted under the scheme, while other minimum educational qualifications continue to apply.
Under the SAKUNTALA Fellowship, female candidates with a BTech, BE, BArch or BDes degree from Ministry of Education-funded technical institutions and a CGPA of at least 8.5 can be considered for PhD admission in relevant disciplines. The GATE, CEED or national-level examination requirement is waived for eligible candidates under this scheme.IIT ROORKEE PHD APPLICATION FEE
Candidates have to pay the application fee online. The fee is Rs 500 for GEN, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL candidates, while SC, ST and PwD candidates have to pay Rs 250.
The fee is charged per department, centre or school. Candidates applying to more than one department, centre or school have to pay according to the number of choices.HOW TO APPLY FOR IIT ROORKEE PHD ADMISSION
Candidates have to apply online through the admission portal. The institute has stated that hard copies of the application form are not required and physical applications will not be considered.
Applicants need to register or sign in, complete the application form, pay the applicable fee online and download the submitted application form for their records. The institute has advised candidates to carefully check all details before submitting the application.
The selection process will be based on merit. Shortlisted candidates will be informed about the written test and/or interview by the concerned department, centre or school.
