Ilaiyaraaja honoured in Australia with ceremonial stamp marking 50 years of music
From a small, remote village in Tamil Nadu to the Parliament of Australia, Ilaiyaraaja has come a long way — and the legendary composer says the journey is “truly touching”. As he marks 50 years in the film industry, Ilaiyaraaja has been honoured with a ceremonial stamp in Australia Parliament commemorating his five-decade musical journey.
Announcing the honour on social media, Ilaiyaraaja expressed his gratitude to Victorian Finance Minister Enver Erdogan MP and members of the Australian Parliament. Reflecting on the recognition, he wrote, “Being born in a small, remote village in Tamil Nadu and honored in an Australian Parliament is truly touching.”
He also acknowledged the many people who shaped his musical journey, adding, “I also take this opportunity to thank the countless people who gave life to my music, the artists who walked beside me, and generations of listeners who welcomed my compositions.”I offer my sincere gratitude to the Honorable Enver Erdogan MP, Minister for Finance, Victorian Government, and the Members of Parliament for having my 50-year journey commemorated through a ceremonial stamp release. Ilaiyaraaja's 50-year journey in cinema has been celebrated across the year, with the composer taking his music to audiences around the world through a series of concerts. His golden jubilee tour, which began in July, has included performances across North America, while his upcoming Australia schedule includes Sydney on September 26 and Brisbane on October 5.
The Australian honour comes a year after the Tamil Nadu government felicitated Ilaiyaraaja at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to mark his 50 years in cinema in September 2025.
The composer has also been in the spotlight recently after Gondhal, the Marathi thriller featuring his music, was selected as India's official entry for the International Feature Film category at the Oscars. His music has been among the aspects highlighted following the film's selection.
The latest recognition comes just days before the release of Dorothy, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. Starring Keerthy Suresh, Rishikanth and Sananth, the film has music by Ilaiyaraaja.
