India’s historic T20I against Japan could be affected by Typhoon Dujuan, with heavy rain and strong winds sweeping across eastern Japan ahead of Tuesday’s Suzuki Cup in Sano. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of torrential rain, flooding and landslides as the storm moves towards the Pacific coast.

India’s preparations have already been disrupted, with the team’s scheduled training session on Monday cancelled due to the adverse weather and a wet outfield at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture. The setback has given India limited opportunity to familiarise itself with the playing conditions ahead of the landmark fixture.

The match, scheduled for September 22, will be the first meeting between India and Japan in men’s international cricket. It is being played as part of the Suzuki Cup and celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The weather forecast remains a concern, with cloudy conditions expected in Sano and showers possible during the day. Thunderstorms are also possible, while afternoon rain could make conditions difficult, particularly if the outfield remains wet from the preceding downpour.

The wider Kanto region, which includes Tokyo and neighbouring prefectures, has already experienced heavy rainfall. More than 300 mm of rain has been recorded in parts of eastern Japan since Saturday, including the Izu Islands and areas along the Pacific coast. The weather agency has also warned that linear rain bands could develop, bringing intense rainfall and increasing the risk of flash floods.

According to AccuWeather, there is a chance of rain around 4 PM and 5 PM local time, potentially leading to delays or interruptions. Conditions are expected to remain cloudy, with temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius and humidity in the high 80s.

For India, the match is an important warm-up ahead of the Asian Games, where the team will defend the men’s cricket gold medal won at Hangzhou 2022.
