A landlord-tenant dispute involving an Indian-origin landlady in Canada, has taken another turn after both sides shared videos presenting their versions of the events. The woman named Raj has denied the allegations against her and claimed that the tenants had not paid rent for months and had damaged her property.

In a video shared after reports of her arrest surfaced, Raj addressed the controversy directly in Punjabi. She began by saying she had been taken into police custody but was released immediately.

β€œYes, the police did take me into custody, I don't know what information they had received, but they simply took me home and released me right then and there,” she said.

She also clarified that the video was recorded 10 days earlier but had surfaced publicly only a few days before. She said the controversy had affected her customers and acquaintances and thanked the around 300 customers who visited her.

β€œMy customers, who have supported me so much over the past four years, came to visit me yesterday,” she said, adding that she had been unable to answer all the calls she received.

Raj then gave her account of the tenancy dispute. She claimed the tenants had not paid rent for several months and accused them of harassing her and damaging her property.

β€œI decided to make this video, to let everyone know that I am perfectly fine. Also, the tenants hadn't been paying rent for several months; they were harassing me and damaging the property,” she said.

I had been dealing with the Tenancy Board regarding this, and they have finally been evicted; they were evicted last week. They released those videos later; meanwhile, the police and my lawyer are working on the matter, and we are handling the situation smoothly. What’s done is done, but everything is okay as lawyers, the police, and the Tenancy Board are all involved. Thanks for helping me,” she added.

The dispute had earlier gained attention after the tenant posted videos accusing Raj of harassment and threatening behaviour. In one clip, she was seen entering the man’s home and throwing rocks in his direction before a physical confrontation. The man repeatedly asked her to stop and appeared to keep his distance during the altercation.

The tenant has also disputed Raj's claims about the tenancy and continued to post videos alleging assault by the landlady. In one earlier exchange, she pointed to marks on the property and alleged they had been caused by the tenant’s BBQ, a claim he disputed.

In his last update, the tenant posted a video showing police arriving at the landlady's home. The officers told her, β€œRaj, you are under arrest, please don't argue.”

Seemingly confused, she replied, β€œIt's going to be stressful. No, I have to call my daughter. Can I call my daughter?”

The officers were then seen handcuffing her before escorting her to a police van.- EndsPublished By: Srimoyee ChowdhuryPublished On: Sep 13, 2026 10:26 IST
