Indian startup secures US patent for laser communication ground station
Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup QOSMIC Satellite Systems has secured a US patent for the architecture behind ARGUS, its optical ground station designed to receive high-speed laser communications from satellites.
The patent was granted on September 8, 2026, covering a multi-aperture telescope system that combines optical signals received from satellites. QOSMIC says it filed the application in April and secured the grant in less than a year — a notably quick turnaround for specialised hardware intellectual property.
For decades, optical ground stations have largely followed a simple principle: more light requires a bigger telescope. But building increasingly large telescopes can be expensive, time-consuming and difficult to scale. It can also create a single point of failure, where a problem with the primary telescope can bring the entire ground station offline.
QOSMIC's ARGUS takes a different approach. Instead of relying on one large telescope, it uses multiple smaller telescope units working together as a single receiving system. The architecture can be expanded by adding telescope units rather than replacing the entire system.
According to the company, the design also incorporates precision optics, adjustable telescope mounts, angular positioning and vibration isolation. The collected optical signals are redirected towards a central processing unit, where detectors combine them to produce a signal equivalent to that of a much larger telescope.
The technology addresses a growing challenge in the satellite industry. Modern spacecraft and satellite constellations are generating enormous volumes of data, while conventional radio-frequency links face limits in bandwidth and speed. Laser or optical communications can provide much higher data rates, but require sophisticated ground infrastructure capable of reliably receiving those signals.
QOSMIC's technology is aimed at making that receiving infrastructure modular, scalable and faster to deploy.
The patent also marks a significant milestone for India's emerging private space sector. The company says the technology was conceived, engineered and validated in India before gaining protection in the US.
QOSMIC develops laser communication systems for satellites, including its ZAPHOD satellite optical terminal and ARGUS optical ground station. Founded and incubated at ARTPARK, IISc Bengaluru, the startup is backed by Accel, Prosus, South Park Commons and ARTPARK.
