Indonesia Announces Bid for UN Security Council Seat in 2029-2030 - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will seek a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029-2030 term, Foreign Minister Sugiono announced at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday, September 26.

“Indonesia is putting forward its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029-2030 term,” Sugiono said in Indonesia’s national statement, delivered at the General Assembly and monitored from Jakarta.

Indonesia will campaign under the theme “Building Unity, Advancing Peace,” Sugiono said.

He said “building unity” would involve strengthening trust in the multilateral system and keeping channels for international dialogue open.

“Advancing peace,” meanwhile, would mean continuing to promote the enforcement of international law and making use of available mechanisms to support that goal, he said.

Sugiono said Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to global peace and conflict resolution supported its bid for a seat on the council.

“Our Constitution mandates us to contribute to the world based on the values of independence, lasting peace and social justice through diplomacy and mediation,” he said.

Sugiono also highlighted Indonesia’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations, saying the country has been among the UN’s largest contributors since 1957. Indonesian peacekeepers have also served in Lebanon under the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for two decades, he said.

If elected to the Security Council, Indonesia would seek to keep dialogue open, build common ground and turn shared responsibilities into concrete cooperation, Sugiono said.

“We will bring the same principles that guide our foreign policy when engaging with all parties, while keeping the space for cooperation open,” he said.

Sugiono announced Indonesia’s plan to seek a non-permanent Security Council seat for 2029-2030 during his annual foreign policy press statement on January 14, 2026. He said at the time that Indonesia would begin campaigning to secure support for its candidacy.

Indonesia has served four terms as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, in 1973-1974, 1995-1996, 2007-2008 and 2019-2021. Indonesia also held the council’s rotating presidency in August 2020.
