Indonesia Loses US$6.2bn from Cyber Attacks This Year
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Automation and artificial intelligence (AI) use deepen cybersecurity risks, according to Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti, adding that cyber attacks have caused a total of US$6.2 billion worth of damage in Indonesia this year alone.
Beyond that, automation and AI use also raise the risks for data misuse, fraud, and scams. "The losses linked to cyber attacks in Indonesia this year alone are estimated to reach around US$6.2 billion," she said in Jakarta, on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Because of this, Destry urged ministries and institutions to ensure secure payment system policies and consumer protection. Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia has been mandated to create and develop a payment system ecosystem that is reliable, secure, and trustworthy.
Destry also cited digitalization as a positive tool to accelerate competitiveness and economic growth, albeit rife with risks, which further necessitates literacy and consumer protection.
Bank Indonesia is committed to supporting literacy programs carried out by the government, as well as the Financial Services Authority. "Because we know, the more sophisticated and interconnected, the greater the risks that will occur," she said.
In response to the increasingly complex cyber attacks, the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) supports the immediate passing of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill (KKS Bill).
APJII Chair Muhammad Arif said that the internet service provider industry requires legal certainty to grow, as well as having clear and integrated security standards.
"APJII supports the ratification of the KSS Bill, Indonesian service providers need legal certainty to grow, not disruptive regulations," said Arif, citing Antara, Thursday, September 24, 2026.
APJII's monitoring data reported that on August 28, 2026, there were 246.4 million contacts to dangerous IP addresses since June 13. Within a three-day period of observation, APJII also detected around 68 million cyber attack events.
