Indonesia Targets Nuclear Power Plant Operation by 2032, Technologies from US to Russia Still Open
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia remains open to collaborating with several countries in developing nuclear power plants (PLTN), aiming to have them operational or on-stream by 2032.
Member of the National Energy Council (DEN) Satya Widya Yudha said that several countries have offered their technologies for Indonesia's PLTN development.
These countries include the United States (US), Russia, South Korea, Japan, and China.
"It's still open. There are quite a few countries approaching us, including the US, Russia, then Korea, Japan, and China," Satya told Kompas.com on the sidelines of the Energy Leadersβ Talk event at Graha Bimasena, Jakarta, Friday (18/9/2026).
According to Satya, the government has not yet exclusively decided on investors or the technology to be used for building the PLTN from any single country.
He added that discussions about PLTN development currently include site selection.
In the short term, Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan (Kalbar) are prioritized regions.
Meanwhile, based on existing studies, approximately 28 locations have been identified as potential sites for PLTN development.
"BRIN mentioned there are 28 potential sites, but in the short term itβs Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan. So likely these two locations," Satya said.
For the initial phase, the PLTN will be developed using small modular reactor (SMR) technology.
Satya noted that one company which has held talks with the government is the US company NuScale.
The SMR technology from NuScale is being discussed for the PLTN development at Pantai Gosong, West Kalimantan.
"The one that has talked with us is from the US. NuScale, intended for West Kalimantan at Pantai Gosong," he said.
Besides the US, Russia also offers SMR technology, including floating SMR technology. According to Satya, this technology allows modular reactors to be placed on floating facilities, eliminating the need to be sited on a fixed land location.
"Russia has proven SMR and floating technology. So floating means it doesnβt have to be at one siteβit can be mobile," Satya explained.
