Indonesians in Flood-Hit Nepal Remain Safe, Authorities Say - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian nationals staying in flood-hit Nepal remain in good condition, according to Heni Hamidah, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The region along Nepal-Tibet border has been hit with devastating flash floods and landslides on August 26. 

"We are monitoring the condition of all Indonesian citizens (in Nepal) and they remain in good condition," said Heni in Jaakrta on Monday, August 31, 2026, as quoted from Antara.

According to Heni, there are 45 Indonesians residing in the region, with six Indonesian tourists visiting the Pokhara City area of Nepal.

Heni also updated information on the number of people affected by the disaster in Nepal, including 2,426 missing, 4,451 safely evacuated, and 101 hospitalized. Of the foreign tourists from 32 countries declared missing or lost contact due to the disaster in Nepal, 184 have been rescued. Meanwhile, 420 other foreign tourists have not been contacted due to network disruptions.

A flash flood struck Nepal on Wednesday when a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung, Nepal, cracked at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters.

The crack in the glacier triggered an avalanche of ice and rock that grew into a massive debris flow and swept through valleys along the Nepal-Tibet border.

The massive surge of water, along with mudslides, devastated the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavre, and Kathmandu Valley regions of Nepal, and inundated the Gyirong border region on the China side.
