Indonesias National Team Faces Thailand, Prabowo: Joyful, This is Pride!
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto expressed joy and pride after the Indonesian national team triumphed over Thailand in the final of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on Monday (5/10/2026) evening.
"Yes, we are happy. We are grateful; we are proud of our team's struggle," Prabowo said after watching the match live at GBK, as quoted by Kompas TV on Monday.
He felt pride because the Indonesian team did not give up until the last moments of the match.
"They did not surrender until the final seconds. I think it’s commendable," he stated.
According to Prabowo, this victory exemplifies that Indonesia can win.
"And this is an example. An example of a spirit that does not know surrender, and we can succeed, and this might be the first time in history that we win a FIFA international match," he added.
As previously reported, the Indonesian national team emerged as the champion of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after defeating the Thai national team in a penalty shootout, 4-2, following a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes.
Indonesia took the lead first with a free-kick goal from Dean James in the 84th minute.
However, just three minutes later, Thailand equalized through Iklas Sanron.
The War Elephants briefly turned the tables with a goal from Peeradol during extra time before Indonesia forced a draw again thanks to a goal from Elkan Baggott.
The winner was then determined through a penalty shootout.
Indonesia claimed the championship with a 4-2 advantage.
