Indonesia's Southwest Sumba Hit by Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Southwest Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, on Sunday at 05:55 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
"The epicenter was located at sea, 14 km southwest of Kodi, Southwest Sumba, at a depth of 10 km and coordinates 9.70° S - 118.92° E. The earthquake posed no tsunami threat," stated Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB's Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, in Jakarta on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Based on preliminary monitoring by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), strong shaking was felt for approximately one minute across several areas, including Southwest Sumba Regency, West Sumba Regency, and West Manggarai Regency.
While some residents felt the quake, the situation remained calm, and there was no panic. The local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is currently conducting post-earthquake monitoring in the field; there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far.
The BNPB urges local residents to remain calm, disregard unverified rumors, and ensure that information comes from official sources.
In the event of aftershocks, residents are advised to avoid buildings with cracks and to stay away from the coastline for the time being.
