International training programme on teak planting material production, nursery techniques at KFRI

The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi, Thrissur, is organising a four-day international training programme on “Advanced Training on Teak Planting Material Production, Nursery Techniques and Genomics.”

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO), and the International Teak Information Network (TEAKNET) are supporting the programme, bringing together experts and practitioners to share recent developments, practical experiences, and emerging technologies in the teak sector.

KFRI director Kannan C. S. Warrier, who addressed the event, said the training would provide an opportunity to integrate traditional teak nursery techniques with modern genetic and genomic technologies. He added that the training would also help develop sustainable and productive teak plantations through the production of high-quality planting materials and scientific management.

Participants represent diverse professional backgrounds, including teak planters, researchers, NGOs, consultants, and plantation managers. International and multidisciplinary participation created opportunities for interaction and knowledge exchange among professionals involved in teak cultivation, research, management, and development. The training include technical lectures, practical sessions, laboratory demonstrations, and interactive discussions covering teak nursery management, planting material production, tissue culture, genetic resources, genomics, and related aspects of teak improvement.

The programme is expected to provide participants with practical knowledge and technical insights into producing superior planting material and promoting sustainable, productive teak plantations, the KFRI director said. S. Sandeep and Suma Arun Dev, senior principal scientists, is leading the training.
